ZDNet: Microsoft is seeing shortages of its Xbox 360 video game console in the United States

February 14th, 2008

Could this be due to all of the “Red Ring of Death” fixes? I think so. I have had a couple of people tell me that when they got theirs back, it was a different unit, and not the same one that they had. With that said, it seems to me that their demand for units is really half of what sales are since most of them are going to fail at some point or another. Even with all of the failures, Microsoft is fixing all of them and the Xbox 360 is still a great HD Gaming console. It’s only problem is that with the HD DVD / BluRay War going the way it is, Sony’s PS3 is the better buy because it includes a Blu-Ray Player. The Xbox 360 only has a HD DVD option for now. Microsoft has not announced any plans to make a Blu-Ray add-on for the Xbox.

Microsoft is seeing shortages of its Xbox 360 video game console in the United States, as the company failed to anticipate strong post-holiday demand, an executive said on Wednesday.

ZDNet: Outages could rattle BlackBerry’s iconic status

February 13th, 2008

No kidding! My boss uses a “Crack Berry”. He consistently does not get emails. The thing is a piece of junk. The only way to go for mobile email and scheduling is to run Microsoft Exchange and carry a Windows Mobile phone. I run Exchange and Carry a Cingular 8525 phone. I never have a problem with it and the cool thing about it is that everything is always synced, like my desktops, web-mail, and my phone.  I have heard that an iPhone running IMAP works well as well, but I have not tried it. If you want to go that route then I would suggest talking with Jason Alford. While I will give him credit for having a wealth of knowledge about Apple products, he is one of these “mac freaks” that will spend more time making fun of you for even thinking about using Windows. Anyway, the article is below:

Research In Motion’s BlackBerry could lose its iconic status in the eyes of corporate and retail subscribers alike if it doesn’t manage to stem service problems such the ones that led to two major outages in less than a year, analysts say.

A three-hour service problem left subscribers across the Americas with spotty or nonexistent access to wireless e-mail on Monday.

RIM said late Tuesday an early investigation pointed to a problem with an upgrade of a data routing system. The upgrade was part of an ongoing effort to expand capacity for long-term growth, it said.

The outage hit RIM’s most important market, with about two-thirds of its roughly 12 million subscribers in North America. The region was also the center of a longer outage that snarled wireless e-mail last April. That time, RIM blamed a new storage feature that hadn’t been properly tested.

Research Capital analyst Nick Agostino said that in previous years, there was “relatively little” disruption to RIM’s service, used by executives, politicians, lawyers and other professionals to send secure e-mail to and from handsets.

Now, two major outages have occurred in the space of 10 months.

“Obviously, if this sort of frequency and pattern continues, then it’ll certainly start to turn people off longer term,” Agostino said.

Observers said the latest service problem probably doesn’t mean corporate and retail consumers will give up on the BlackBerry.

However, even without outages, information-technology managers should be looking for alternatives, said Avi Greengart, research director at Current Analysis.

“Any outage is a cause for concern, particularly if you’re an IT manager,” Greengart said. “Your job is to ensure service availability.”

While many IT managers have some fallback options in place, the latest outage could spur more to find alternatives, he said, but added that handing employees two different devices could be impractical.

The service disruption last year didn’t deter investors. Shares of Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM more than doubled in 2007 amid impressive growth in its subscriber base and profits that beat analyst expectations.

However, the stock has had a rough start in 2008, falling about 20 percent so far amid worries over a possible U.S. recession and its potential impact on BlackBerry orders.

While problems with service may not add to concerns over RIM’s fundamentals, they certainly aren’t helping.

“We have some gnashing of teeth, and we move on,” said Iain Grant, managing director at SeaBoard Group in Montreal. “If another one happens relatively soon, I think…some harder questions will be asked.”

Starbucks changing from T-Mobile to AT&T Wi-Fi.

February 12th, 2008

This is a good thinkg I think… Not that I like AT&T, but it will be better than thew existing T-Mobile service. Everyone will get 2 free hours, but from what I read, existing AT&T customers which is most everyone in some way, from, or fasion, will get free access all of the time… Yay!

Starbucks goes with AT&T for WiFi; T-Mobile subscribers will still get access by ZDNet’s Larry Dignan — Starbucks said it will begin offering Wi-Fi access in its 7,000 stores via AT&T ending a long relationship with T-Mobile. Under another pact, subscribers to T-Mobile will still have access to AT&T’s network. Today Starbucks customers need a paid account to T-Mobile to get WiFi access. Starting in the spring, Starbucks will use AT&T for access [...]

My New Motto at Work

February 10th, 2008

I saw this on www.line-man.com. It makes allot of sence and I think I am going to put it in the official “Policy Manual.” I am getting tired of this happening to me. Not that anyone is doing it on purpose, but you get the point…

Please don’t borrow my tools with out telling me.
When you do borrow my tools without telling me and break them, Tell me.
When you do borrow my tools without telling me and lose them, Tell me.
Heck, if you need a tool, just tell me, I might as well buy it for you now, as replace mine later.

Funny from my Dad

February 7th, 2008

I have had a stressful couple of days, so I am not really in the mindset to write a blog post. My dad sent me this in email the other day. It made me laugh and i hope it does you as well…

You too may be a redneck pilot if…
Your stall warning plays Dixie. You get your preflight briefing from the Psychic Hotline. Your cross country flight plan uses flea markets as checkpoints. You think sectional charts should show trailer parks. You’ve ever used moonshine as Avgas. You have mudflaps on your wheel pants. Your toothpick keeps poking your mike. You’ve ever just taxied around the airport drinking beer. You wouldn’t be caught dead in a Grumman Yankee. You use a Purina feed sack for a wind sock. The side of your airplane has a sign advertising your septic tank service. Your aircraft has a hitch. You constantly confuse Beechcraft with Beechnut. You think GPS stands for Going Perfectly Straight. You refer to formation flying as “we got us a convoy”. You’re matched set of luggage is three grocery bags from Piggly Wiggly. You’ve ever fueled your airplane from a mason jar. You’ve got a gun rack on the passenger window. You have more than one roll of duct tape holding your cowling together. Your preflight includes removing all of the clover, grass, and wheat from your landing gear. You figure the weight of the mud and manure on your airplane into the CG calculations. You siphon gas from your tractor to put in your airplane. You’ve never landed at an actual airport though you’ve been flying for years. You’ve ground looped after hitting a cow. You consider anything over 100′ AGL to be high altitude flight. There are parts of your airplane labeled John Deere. You’ve never actually seen a sectional but have all of the Texaco road maps for your flying area. There’s exhaust residue on the right side of your aircraft and tobacco stains on the left. You have to buzz the strip to chase off the sheep and goats. You use your parachute to cover your plane. You’ve ever landed on the main street of town to get a cup of coffee. The tread pattern, if any, on your main tires doesn’t match. Your primary comm. radio has 90 channels. Your comm antenna is over 7 feet long. You call up the tower with “Breaker Breaker.” You have fuzzy dice hanging from the magnetic compass. You put hay in the baggage compartment so your dogs don’t get cold. You use you landing light for hunting. Your flight instructor’s day job is at the community sales barn. You’ve got matching bumper stickers on the vertical fin. There are grass stains on your propeller tips. The FAA still thinks you live at your parents’ house. Your hangar collapses and more than 4 dogs are injured. When starting the prop you injure five dogs. Somewhere on your airplane is an “I’d rather be fishing” bumper sticker. You navigate with your ADF tuned to exclusively country stations. When you go to the airport cafe they hand you biscuits and gravy instead of a menu. You think that an ultralight is a new sissy beer from Budweiser. You siphon Jet-A out of your King Air for your space heater. Just before the crash, everybody at the airport heard you say, “Hey, Y’all watch this!!”
