Neodymium Supermagnets

Most Dangerous Object in the Office This Month: Neodymium Supermagnets

magnets.jpg

These magnets from United Nuclear Scientific Supplies are a little like gremlins — seemingly harmless, even cute, but capable of serious mayhem. Their combined pull force is 800 pounds, meaning they’ll try to tunnel through pretty much any sorry thing that comes between them — furniture, walls, interns, designers. (United Nuclear refused to send us its most powerful pair, which has a total pull force of 4,000 pounds.) We have found, however, that just one of these magnets is all kinds of useful: When the managing editor threatens to cancel Rock Band practice, respond by waving the cylinder of rare earth metal 12 inches from his MacBook. One inch closer and his hard drive is toast!

I heard Christmas is comming soon…

Comcast Sucks!

August 2nd, 2008

Begin Rant:

Comcast Sucks

I am so tired of Comcast. I am paying for Digital Cable so that I can get On Demand. The only problem is that IT DOSEN’T WORK! Comcast does a pathetic job at building their network. Comcast uses a VOD (Video On Demand) from a company called

SeaChange. They make top of the line VOD systems and Ad Insertion systems. The problem is not SeaChange’s though. The problem is in how Comcast had rolled out their network and their poor decisions they have made in regards to capacity within their VOD system. 7 times out of 10 when you select a video to watch, you get a SRM-20 error and it tells you to call customer service, but…. When you call CS and tell them the error code, their flip chart tells them to promptly blow you off and get rid of you saying the problem should clear up shortly, and thank you for calling Comcast. Now I happen to have the SeaChange service manual for the VOD system that is used in the Atlanta market (which is Rome) and here is what the error says (taken directly from the manual):

RspSeNoResource (SRM-20)
The subscriber chose to start a VOD video. The SRM did not start the session because the required resources
were not available.
One or more of the following conditions exists:
No bandwidth is available for the requested Nodegroup
All of the available VOD bandwidth available for the Nodegroup is being used.
ICM Status: NODNP-NOALTERNATES

This combined with all of the internet filtering and bandwidth limiting / shaping crap that is going on, more people should be giving them the boot. The only problem is that they are getting away with it because 99% of the general public has no clue as to what they are doing. I realize I sound like a know it all nerd, but this is what I do for a living.
