National Guard Pulls Out of New Orleans After Katrina

February 28th, 2009

Really?!? They’re just now leaving?!? What have they been doing all this time?

NEW ORLEANS —  Three and a half years after Hurricane Katrina, the National Guard is pulling the last of its troops out of New Orleans this weekend, leaving behind a city still desperate and dangerous. Residents long distrustful of the city’s police force are worried they will have to fend for themselves.

Ira Grant is doing fine.

We have been settled into our recovery room since about 12:00 today. Ira has seen many friends and family today. He is doing great. He is Jacks new little buddy and Whitney is fine as well. She is (finally) asleep right now. I am finishing off my Starbucks about to get some sleep as well. I have posted some more pics below from today for all the out of town family and friends that want to see him. I will post more when we get home. Here are a few for now. I am going to further update facebook when I get home, but honestly I am tired and I am going to bed.

Floyd Hospital needs a new medical equipment tech

February 19th, 2009

This is really not that big of a deal, but it really struck me as funny while Whitney was in labor this morning. As most of you know how I am; I was snooping around the fetal heart rate / contraction monitor while Whitney was pushing away this morning and saw this. In the picture below you see a 725VA UPS. These units are used to supply power to a device (i.e. a computer or in this case a “birthing monitor”) even in the event of a power failure. was you can see in the picture all but one cord is plugged into the “Surge Protection” side and not the “Battery Backup plus Surge Protection” side of the unit. The only thing plugged into the battery backup side of the unit is the LCD monitor for the “Birthing Monitor” device.

DSCN1363Basically if there were a power failure, we would still have power to the nice big 22” LCD monitor, but the rest of the “important medical equipment” that is watching my wife and new child would be dead in the water.

In writing this, I mean nothing bad toward the staff of labor and delivery at FMC. Everyone was wonderful and made our time here go as smooth as possible. This just really base made me laugh and I hope that some of my IT industry friends that read this will laugh as well. Heck someone needs to laugh because I got a stern “PAY ATTENTION” from Whitney when I pointed it out while she was delivering…

Jackson got to meet Ira Grant earlier today and he was much better than expected… He went from “no baby brother” to “Hey! love baby brother.” Hopefully they will be best friends.

Baby update

February 19th, 2009

So… we finally got the weight and length. He is 7 pounds 10.9 inches and 20 inches long. They have taken him back to the nursery for a couple of hours. I will add some more pictures when we get him back.

Next big hurdle: getting the Jack Attack acquainted with baby brother.

We are settled in at the hospital. Whitney is wired up, hooked up, and tubed up. They want to wait 4 to 5 hours to start “inducing.” More to come later…

Obama Beatbox

February 17th, 2009

First off I am not a Bush fan. Second off… This is about the best thing Obama has done since he got in office, and… He didn’t even do it… Nice editing though.
