Thomas the Tank Engine Transformer

July 31st, 2009

Jack would love to have one of these…

from Neatorama by John

Or perhaps this toy is inspired by Voltron, rather than the Transformers. Either way, when the island’s railways are threatened, Thomas and his friends unite to form a devastating weapon. I don’t know who makes this toy, but it’s on sale at eBay in Singaporean currency.

Inside U2’s Behemoth 74-Ton 360° LED Concert Screen

July 26th, 2009

Wow… Once you get past the screen and the general stage design, take a look at the two line array’s hanging in the middle… Dang…

Inside U2’s Behemoth 74-Ton 360° LED Concert Screen [LEDs]

from Gizmodo by Jack Loftus

Love them or hate them, there’s no denying U2 has a knack for bending light to its will. Their latest creation is no different. At 74 tons, it’s an epic, morphing LED centerpiece for an already technology-heavy concert tour.

Based on a Hoberman Sphere, the criss-crossed network of aluminum, 25km of cables, and 888 LED screens is comprised of more than 1 million different pieces and 500,000 RGB pixels. When fully expanded, the seven-story shape swallows up the band with more than 3,800 square feet of space. It is assembled in a mere eight hours, and will be on tour with the band for 18 months.

The real kudos goes to the design team however, which consists of Willie Williams, Mark Fisher, Frederic Opsomer, and Chuck Hoberman (concept); and the folks at Innovative Design, Barco and Hoberman Associates.

Those large pylons in the larger pic are part of "the Claw," which holds the structure up during the performance. Larger still, and only partially seen in the image, is Bono’s ego, whose immense size remains immeasurable. [Live Design via Lucept]

What happened to Space?

July 20th, 2009

This was on www.hometownheadlines.com this morning on the Peaks and Valleys section… I could not have said it any better…

image Valley to the nation’s lack of progress in space: As a Space Coast brat, we saw almost every manned launch from 1964 through 1991. None, of course, was more historic than Apollo 11. As many remember that "one small step for man" exactly 40 years later, we regret that our nation has taken a "giant leap" backward in space exploration. We should have been to Mars in the four decades after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s walk on the moon. Instead we’re retiring an aging Shuttle fleet and will have to rely on Russian space taxis to get to the space station. Russians. As in the country we beat to the moon. We salute Neil, Buzz and Michael Collins’ achievement–and apologize to each for failing to take the critical next step for mankind. (Photo from NASA site> Click)

I fell asleep at the pool today

July 19th, 2009

Liz and Josh’s daughter wanted me to hold her doll today; so I did and promptly fell asleep… Given that I got home at 4:00 A.M. and had to be up again at 7:00 A.M., I was pretty well out of it.

Nickel Creek Covering Toxic

July 11th, 2009

I can’t find where I ever posted this so I thought now would be a good time. I was going through some stuff on my You Tube account and found it. I love covers like this. Usually the covers are better than the real thing. I never thought I would like a Brittany Spears song so much… Love the set / lighting too…

Teenager Falls Into Open Manhole While Texting

July 11th, 2009

I think they should sue the person she was texting for not making sure the other party in the conversation was safe. That makes allot of legal sense now days…

Teenager Falls Into Open Manhole While Texting [Texting]

from Gizmodo by Dan Nosowitz

As if you needed more evidence that texting is more dangerous than swine flu, a 15-year-old girl from Staten Island walked into an open manhole while texting. She’s fine, don’t worry, although she did lose a shoe in the sewer.

Alexa Longueira fell about 4 or 5 feet into an open manhole in Staten Island, scraping up her back and shoulders in the process, although she is otherwise physically unharmed. Her mother noted that she was also mentally injured, as the sewer was "putrid" and one of her shoes remains down there. Apparently, there were some DEP workers on the scene who were "looking" for cones to mark the area when the girl fell in.

The Longueira family says they will sue, although it’s not clear exactly who—the city? The cellphone company? Alexa herself, for not watching where she was walking? Regardless, we are all allowed to laugh at this story, at teenagers with their texting, and at Staten Island as a whole, because the girl is unhurt. Proceed.

Drums make everything better…

July 9th, 2009

This is just proof that a good Drummer can make anything better. Heck I even like gospel if the band is good…
